While most companies seek to make a full axis motion sensor using a module composed of individual sensors for each particular axis, Virtus’ design allows it to measure multiple axes with a single device. While some other companies have multi-axis sensors, an important distinction needs to be made when compared to Virtus’ sensor technology. Although such multi-axis sensors usually come in a single package, the package is usually composed of separate single-axis devices and separate proof masses. Thus, in terms of silicon area, the device takes up twice as much area as a single proof mass device. Virtus’ technology utilizes a single proof mass to measure motion in multiple axes. Because there is a single proof mass, the area of silicon is reduced and both cost savings and small form-factors can be realized.
Virtus holds key technologies which enable both 3-axis accelerations and 3-axis angular velocities to be measured all with the same proof mass. Thus, you no longer need to look for multi-module solutions for a fully integrated, 6-axis inertial measure unit (IMU). With Virtus technology, a full IMU can be fabricated using a single MEMS proof mass all with integrated electronics to bring the customer unsurpassed performance in a single chip.
